About Kimberly Townsend
Kimberly has worked in Behavioral Health for several years and as a Mental Health Counselor/Therapist since 2019. Kimberly provides individual, couples and family therapy, for adults and children. Working in public schools, community service agencies and inpatient settings has given Kimberly the opportunity to work with kids, teens and adults experiencing a wide range of clinical diagnoses, stressors, skill deficits and personal vulnerabilities. You will experience a warm and easy welcome and find a steadfast supporter in Kimberly, who cares deeply about her clients, no matter what.
In the therapy room, you will be centered. All cultures, ethnicities, orientations, identities and abilities will be safe and respected. Kimberly has worked with and supported clients experiencing challenges such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorders, grief/loss, trauma/PTSD, sexuality, communication skills, social skills, relationships, identities (the many “hats” we wear), systemic stressors such as discrimination and bias, changes (positive or challenging), women’s issues, men’s issues, suicidality, self-harm behaviors, adolescent/teen stressors, safety issues, better choices, abuse issues, phobias, OCD, boundaries, veteran/military service, first responder service and foster care.
Kimberly greatly values kindness, non-judgment and when necessary, challenging expectations about what people are supposed to do and why. Kimberly teaches clients to treat the therapy room like a comfortable science lab. We store our “stuff” at the door and enter the room, both client and therapist put on “lab goggles” that help clients get curious about their own lives, say the quiet part out loud and consider new ways of thinking and doing things.
Kimberly utilizes a Systems Therapy approach to gain insight into your authentic experiences and stressors. All behavior and choices have a reason that originates within ourselves and/or as a result of the systems around us (family, community, etc.). Kimberly also uses the following therapeutic approaches and techniques; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Trauma-Informed, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused, Feminist Therapy, Client Empowerment, Multicultural Therapy and Mindfulness/Sensory-based coping skills. These tools can increase self-regulation capabilities, reduce distress and increase daily functioning.
Whether you are new or experienced in mental health therapy, whether you’ve had positive or negative therapy experiences, Kimberly will work gently and diligently to build connection, rapport and mutual trust. To begin, Kimberly will listen to your needs and co-create a Treatment Plan with you, based on your priorities and therapy goals.
