What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication challenges and speech disorders. The goal of Speech Therapy is to improve communication, including articulation therapy, language intervention activities and others depending on the type of speech or language disorder.

Our Speech and Language team specializes in assessing, diagnosing and treating communication challenges and speech disorders. We focus on you or your child’s speech intelligibility, receptive and expressive language, social language, fluency, and executive functioning. Our goal is happy children and adults who can better communicate in their home, school, and communities.

How Does Speech Therapy Work?

Speech therapy can take place in-person at our Fort Myers-Plantation office or through telehealth. All Speech challenges are unique, so our speech pathologists will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan for you or your child. Speech therapy exercises and activities for children can include interacting through talking, playing, using books and pictures as part of language intervention to help stimulate language development, modeling correct sounds and syllables, and providing strategies and homework for child and caregivers on  how to continue the work at home. For adults, we begin with an assessment to create your tailored treatment plan. Speech therapy for adults work to improve speech, language and cognitive communication. Adults in speech therapy can expect to do a number of exercises targeted at improving a specific challenge you’re experiencing. Examples of adult speech therapy activities include tongue exercises, smiling, reading our loud or playing games.
