Speech Therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication challenges and speech disorders. The goal of Speech Therapy is to improve communication.
Both children and adults can improve their speech and language skills through therapies such as articulation therapy and language intervention activities. The type of therapy used will depend on the specific speech or language disorder.
Our Speech and Language team specializes in assessing, diagnosing and treating communication challenges and speech disorders.
We focus on speech intelligibility, receptive and expressive language, social/pragmatic language, fluency, and executive functioning.
Our goal is to help children and adults more effectively communicate in their home, school, and communities.
How Does Speech Therapy Work?
Speech therapy can take place in-person at our Fort Myers Occupational Therapy, Speech & ABA office or through telehealth.
All speech challenges are unique. Our speech pathologists will work closely with you to develop and implement a treatment plan for you or your child.
What Can I Expect?
Speech therapy exercises and activities for children can include:
- interacting through talking and playing
- using books and pictures as part of language intervention to help stimulate language development
- modeling correct sounds and syllables
- modeling and use of assistive technology for communication
Then our trained speech therapists provide strategies and “homework” for the child and caregivers to carry over and generalize skills at home and in the community.
For adults, we begin with an assessment to create your tailored treatment plan.
Speech therapy exercises and activities for adults can include specific work designed to improve speech, language and cognitive communication.
Adults in speech therapy can expect to do several exercises targeted at improving a specific challenge you’re experiencing. Examples of adult speech therapy activities include oro-facial exercises, reading out loud, and oral language stimulation exercises.
